Building active communities – 12 new pilots unveiled
Posted: Mon, 11 Dec 2017 10:20
A bold new approach to tackling inactivity is under way in 12 places across England, as one local volunteer says it's time "to look at the problem from every angle we can".
We've today revealed the places that will benefit from around £100 million of National Lottery funding.
They'll act as pilots, testing collaborative partnerships that make it easier for people to do sport and physical activity.
Volunteer Cheryl Dixon, who lives in North Ormesby in Middlesbrough – one of the pilot areas – says: "This award is massive for the community. "At the moment when funding comes in, it tends to be top down, and doesn't always get to the areas that need it."
The 34-year-old winner of the British Empire Medal for voluntary services to the community adds: "I volunteer seven days a week in the community hub. We provide a safe space for mental health services to come in and deliver workshops, but ultimately local families and children still don't have access to activities because they don't have any disposable income.
"By combining the work I do with the families in the community hub, and the council, and the sports sessions with Sport England, we're going to hit every angle and we're going to see real sustainable change."
The pilots will focus on people who experience the most barriers to being active, such as those on low incomes, women, older adults, people from certain ethnic groups and people with disabilities.
Working across the chosen communities, these stubborn inequalities will be addressed, looking at factors like poor transport, safety and cost.
Organisations from across the local area, including voluntary groups, local authorities, faith organisations, schools and GPs, will join forces as we work closely with each place to devise tailored approaches.
